Ashley began riding at age 4 on her Welsh pony Ruby which she rode bareback around her parent's farm in Wisconsin. As a youth, she learned to ride all seats western, hunt, jumping and saddle seat. She spent a number of years specializing in saddleseat equitation riding Saddlebreds with World Cup instructors. During her youth career she won a number of local, regional and national titles on the Arabian show circuit. She won her first national title at age 12. Ashley has always been gifted with young horses and started training at a young age for her family's business, Darley Farms.
During college, and grad school Ashley focused on her love of jumping and competed in equitation over fences, jumpers and later three-day eventing. She trained a number of horses for jumping during this time including her family’s Arabians as well as off-the-track thoroughbreds. She was fortunate to clinic with several Olympians during this time including Buck Davidson.
As a third-generation teacher and entrepreneur, Ashley has always had a love for teaching. She taught riding lessons throughout her youth, during grad school she shared her love of the equestrian sport by teaching beginner lessons at Twin Tree Farm in Pendleton, SC.
Following her family to Scottsdale AZ, her move to the west has allowed her to enjoy all that horses have to offer enjoying the desert lifestyle by trail riding and horse camping with her mother's Half-Arabian mare, Duchess. Ashley believes "good riding, is good riding" where learning classic fundamentals allow you to enjoy a variety of equestrian sports.
Susan is an accomplished and successful horsewoman, her life has been dedicated to breeding, training and showing Arabian horses. She specializes in starting young riders and horses in all disciplines, from walk trot to National Champions.
Susan began riding at age 3 on her Uncle's ranch in South Dakota, This experience sparked a love affair with horses and a life in the equestrian world. She continued to ride in Texas and at 10 was cleaning stalls and feeding horses for riding privileges, She got her first horse, Danny Boy, from her Uncle's ranch at age 13. He was an unbroke 3 year old Quarter horse. She gently trained him for Western Pleasure, taking him to local shows and the County Fair.
When Susan was 15 she received for her birthday her first Arabian Show horse, DayDream Zameel. Susan began showing in local and regional Class A shows in Saddle Seat and Western Pleasure, Together Daydream Zameel and Susan won many blue ribbons and Championships. This experience expanded her interest in English Pleasure and Saddle Seat riding.
Susan continued her education after High School at William Woods College in Fulton Mo, She double majored in Equestrian Science and Fine Arts.graduated with a BFA in 1980. At William Woods she rode American Saddlebreds under Gayle Lampe. She also rode Hunt Seat and Western Pleasure expanding her knowledge on good horsemanship,
In 1985 she founded Darley Farms in Wausau WI. Darley Farms was a full service Equestrian center offering riding lessons, training and breeding services, Susan bred over 40 National winning Arabians. Susan coached and taught many young riders to win local, Regional and National awards, including her daughter, Ashley Ann Buelt.
Closing Darley Farms in 2011 opened new opportunities to move to the West. Susan is located in Scottsdale Az and continues to ride her Half Arabian Duchess. Susan is thrilled to be able to once again share her love of horses with her daughter, Ashley and Third Gen.
